LeBron James has words for Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney after their loss to Ohio State in the college football National Championship playoffs. Ohio State, in a show of force, destroyed any chances of the Tigers taking home a trophy this year.
James is a big Ohio State fan, repping the team when they won the championship against Oregon in 2015. The NBA superstar criticized Swinney for remarks he made earlier about Ohio. The Clemson coach found his words coming back to haunt him after the upset.
On Twitter, James wrote, “I’m looking forward to seeing what Dabo answer is when they ask him if he still think @OhioStateFB is the 11th best team in the country.”
In the Amway Coaches Poll, Swinney ranked Ohio State as only the 11th best team in the country. Sweeney and others took issue with Ohio State only playing six games this season. During that poll, Swinney ranked his own team as No. 2 in the country. But other coaches consistently ranked Ohio State at no. 3 in the country.
Dabo Swinney Has an Answer
Swinney does have an answer for James and any other person who criticized his ranking. The coach admits he has no regrets when it comes to where he ranked Ohio State.
“I don’t regret any of that, and polls have nothing to do with motivation,” Swinney told ESPN. “Both teams were highly motivated to play.”
Ultimately, the number of games factored into Swinney’s decision. But the head coach does regret the loss and not having the opportunity to face Alabama for what seems like the hundredth time.
“They’re a great team,” Swinney said. “[The ranking] had nothing to do with Ohio State. I said they were good enough to beat us, good enough to win the whole dang thing. But I didn’t think anybody that didn’t play at least nine games, in my poll, that I wasn’t going to put them in the top 10. So I wasn’t going to change that just because there was a chance we could play them. So I don’t have any regret about that. Only thing I regret is obviously not doing a good enough job getting my team ready. But I don’t regret anything about that at all.”
Ohio State will play against Alabama on Jan. 11 for the National Championship. James will be sure to be rooting for his favorite college football team then.
