Following the decision from Netflix to take down the Chappelle’s Show, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James praised the company for taking it down.
Netflix decided to take down Dave Chappelle’s popular sketch comedy show in what many saw as a surprising move.
In a recent video called “Unforgiven,” footage from one of Chappelle’s recent stand-up routines reveals that he never received compensation from ViacomCBS for his work. They own the rights to the show.
In the clip, Chappelle calls asks his fans to not watch the show. He explains that he wants to be paid properly for the streaming rights to the show. However, he admits that he signed a contract with the company in the early 2000s granting them rights to his show and likeness.
“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right?” Chappelle asks. “I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either.”
LeBron James, a friend of Chappelle’s saw that Netflix took down the series and gave them a shoutout to his 48.3 million followers on Twitter.
LeBron James Supports Boycott of Chappelle’s Show
According to Chappelle, he was furious when he found out the show was streaming on various platforms including CBS Access, HBO Max and Netflix.
Chappelle goes on to say in the “Unforgiven” video that he called representatives at Netflix to ask them to take down the show, which they did. The show was rated in the top-10 of Netflix’s platform last week. However, it disappeared seemingly for no reason until Chappelle’s recent explanation.
Meanwhile, Chappelle says that now he’s reaching out to his fans for support. He was told by his agent there isn’t much room to negotiate pay with Viacom.
“I’m coming to my real boss. I’m coming to you. If you ever liked me. If you ever think there was anything worthwhile about me, I’m begging you. Please don’t watch that show,” Chappelle pleads. “I’m not asking you to boycott any network, Boycott me, boycott Chappelle show, do not watch it, unless they pay me.”
