Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn and NHL star P.K. Subban are ending their engagement after three years together. The Olympic skier, 36, announced that the two were splitting up on Instagram Tuesday.
“Over the past 3 years PK and I have had some incredible times together. He is a kind, good man, and someone I respect a great deal,” Vonn wrote in her Instagram post alongside a photo of the former couple. “However, after much consideration we have decided to move forward separately,” she continued. “We will always remain friends and love each other immensely. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.”
The former Olympian retired from professional skiing in 2019. Vonn produced a career for the ages that saw a record number of World Cup wins. She also began dating Subban, a defenseman on the New Jersey Devils, in early 2018.
The 31-year-old Subban shared the same image on his own Instagram.
“Lindsey is one of the most kind and caring people I know. I will always treasure our time as a couple together and the many laughs we shared,” he wrote.
It’s a surprising breakup without a doubt. Both Vonn and Subban were one of those couples who always seemed very much in love. The high-profile duo was frequently seen on vacation living it up. In their photos, they were always looking extremely happy together.
The couple never really had any public signs of a falling out. It’s hard to say what happened, especially with both Vonn and Subban expressing similar sentiments on social media.
Lindsey Vonn Co-Hosts Sports Illustrated Awards
The star skier was looking stunning in a red dress when she co-hosted the 2020 Sports Illustrated Awards on December 20th. However, there were no signs of Subban. Vonn was wearing her engagement ring, however. The couple was last seen together on her Instagram account back in October.
In October she said their wedding plans were on hold. ‘We are in a holding pattern,’ said Vonn, citing COVID-19 as a reason for the holdup.
“With COVID, it just feels like there’s no good option, you know? I don’t have a timeline or a plan, we’re just kind of going to wait and see,” she said. “Obviously, his family is in Canada, so I can’t physically get to Canada and they can’t get here. It’ll happen eventually, we just don’t know when.”
At the time, Vonn said the happy couple was in “no rush.”
“Neither of us are really worried about when we’re going to get married,” she commented. “We know it’s gonna happen, so we’re not in a rush about it.”
It seems as though one or both of Vonn and Subban have changed their minds.
