Matthew McConaughey Once Interviewed Tom Brady: Here’s What The Football Star Told Him About His On-Field Thoughts

Back in 2012, actor Matthew McConaughey interviewed Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. During their talk, Brady opened up and shared insight on his on-field thoughts when he’s feeling at his best and worst.

McConaughey asked the legendary quarterback a series of questions for Interview magazine. At the time, Brady and the New England Patriots were in the middle of their two-decade-long dynasty. The franchise had already won three Super Bowl titles by 2012 and would go on to win three more before Brady headed to Florida this past offseason.

The actor spoke to Brady before the season began, and the pair focused heavily on the mentality it takes to win in the NFL. McConaughey asked Brady, “Does mental toughness come into play?”

The 6-time Super Bowl winner said he’s fortunate to have played for head coach Bill Belichick. He thinks Belichick’s communication with his players gives the Patriots a competitive advantage. However, it’s the “mental toughness” that separates good players from great players.

“Every quarterback can throw a ball; every running back can run; every receiver is fast; but that mental toughness that you talk about translates into competitiveness. A lot of times I find that people who are blessed with the most talent don’t ever develop that attitude. And the ones who aren’t blessed in that way are the most competitive and have the biggest heart,” Brady explained.

Tom Brady ‘Can See Things Before They Happen’ On the Field

As Matthew McConaughey digs a little deeper, he finds out more about what makes Tom Brady tick. He asks the quarterback what’s going on within Brady when he’s at his best and worst on the field.

“Describe what’s happening when Tom Brady’s at his best,” McConaughey says to Brady.

“I can see the things before they happen,” Brady answers. “If you know what’s going to happen, boy, you can really slow the action down for yourself.”

“And if you’re not at your best?” the actor asks the QB.

“I think a lot of that is about confidence,” Brady explains. “There are times when you throw an interception and you’re beating yourself up. Then there are times when I’m not feeling good because maybe I got off to a slow start or didn’t build my confidence.”

The fascinating interview between the famous actor and quarterback made an impression on McConaughey. During his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, McConaughey touched on the pair’s talk from years past. The actor is still just as blown away by Brady as he was during their discussion in Interview magazine.

You can listen to McConaughey talk about Brady, and Kimmel hilariously compare himself to the quarterback beginning around the 5:30 mark of the clip below.
