McKayla Maroney and her Olympic gymnastic career sparked a viral meme after the 2012 Olympics in London.
You probably remember the meme. McKayla Maroney was not impressed. The then 17-year-old was the overwhelming favorite to win the gold medal on the vault. But she slipped on her second try and slipped to the silver medal. Sandra Izbasa of Romania pulled off the upset. Maroney was second. Russia’s Maria Paseka took the bronze.
And from the medal stand, Maroney cocked an eye brow and pursed her lips. She was not impressed. She did the look at the White House, posing with then President Barack Obama. The unimpressed face vaulted Maroney to instant fame. Gymnastic fans remember who won the all-around (Gabby Douglas). But the general sports fan who spent any kind of time on social media still recognizes Maroney.

So what’s the gymnast up to now? After all, the was a key member of the “Fierce Five,” the U.S. women’s gymnastics team that won overall gold at the 2012 London Olympics. It was only the second time the American women won the gold, but it was the first time they’d done so at an Olympics on foreign soil. The 1996 women’s team also won gold, but did it in front of a very pro-American crowd in Atlanta.

Maroney Released Her First Single in 2020
Maroney released her first single 11 months ago, days right as the COVID 19 pandemic shut down the world. She called the song “Wake Up Call.” And you can listen to it here.
She posted on Twitter: “Thinking of u guys. I know we’re all locked inside and worried. But I wanted to take the time to say thank u, and that I love u guys. I know it’s hard and scary. But try and stay positive and take a deep breath.
“Something I’m doing personally is finding little things to do at home to trick myself into being productive. I’ve been doing some organizing and spring cleaning. I’ve been planning out my next goals for music. It finally stopped raining in Cali. So I’ve been laying in the sun a bit, playing with my dog and doing little home workouts from my garage. And my singing lessons. Distractions (are) powerful.
“Find a way to turn this time into a blessing into disguise. Whether u believe it or not, cuz keeping your immune system up is not just eating healthy, but thinking healthy. Take care of yourself, lots of love.”
Two months later, Maroney released another single called “COVID Lockdown.” She raps in it and you can find the song on iTunes or Spotify.
