Michael Jordan announced Wednesday that he donated $2 million to Feeding America to help families in need. The basketball legend is giving away some of his proceeds from the documentary “The Last Dance.” The series examines Jordan’s time with the Chicago Bulls.

“In these challenging times and in a year of unimaginable difficulty due to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to pause and give thanks,” he said in a statement to TMZ Sports. “I am proud to be donating additional proceeds from “The Last Dance” to Feeding America and its member food banks in the Carolinas and Chicago to help feed America’s hungry.”

This Thanksgiving may be one of the direst for many American families. That’s because the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated already difficult conditions for many people. Moreover, economic insecurity and need have skyrocketed this year.

Feeding America said recently it projects more than 50 million Americans will have faced hunger in 2020. That’s up from 35 million last year.

The charity thanked Jordan for helping them in their mission to feed Americans in need.

“An incredible gift to be thankful for. NBA legend Michael Jordan is donating $2 million to help our neighbors facing hunger!,” Feeding America tweeted about the donation.

Michael Jordan Has Made Other Big Donations in 2020

The gift to Feeding America is the second large donation the NBA legend has made this year. Earlier, Jordan and the Jordan Brand announced a 10-year, $100 million donation to “ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.”

Jordan said that Americans must do more to combat systemic racism.

“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement,” he wrote in a press release about the donation. “Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.”
