One of the greatest defenders to ever step on a football field, Michael Strahan will have his New York Giants number retired by the team.

Michael Strahan wore the number 92 for the New York Giants and now — no one else will ever wear his number. Strahan was drafted by the New York Giants in the 1992 NFL draft and he would go on to be one of the most dominant defensive linemen of all time. Michael Strahan seemed unblockable at times as he raced around much bigger offensive linemen on his way to the quarterback. He holds numerous NFL records, including most sacks in a single season. Strahan played all 15 of his professional seasons with just one team — a rarity in today’s game. He finished his New York Giants career with 142 sacks — a very impressive number. He was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Michael Strahan just turned 50-years-old a few days ago and was in a reflective mood on Wednesday. In a social media post, the humble Strahan thanked his teammates, coaches and New York Giants fans for their support. He says the retirement of his number 92 couldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support over the years.

“This Sunday, I have the extreme honor to head to Metlife Stadium to have number 92 officially retired by the New York Giants,” he says in the post. “15 years of representing the team on and off the field and closing out my career with a Super Bowl win went by in a flash! This didn’t happen without a lot of help. I had many great teammates, coaches, and supporters who made me a better football player and man.”

The former NFLer continued his post by saying there are so many people to thank for their support.

“Too many to name individually, but I want to thank them all!” he continues. “To be recognized on Sunday will absolutely be a moment I will forever be grateful for. See you all on Sunday. Pretty amazing to see this billboard (swipe left) in Times Square from the Giants.”

Michael Strahan includes a photo of the Times Square billboard in his social media post.

Since leaving the game of football, Strahan has found equal success in the media industry. He currently serves as the co-host of Good Morning America.

Despite all of his success, Michael Strahan hasn’t forgotten where he came from and he gives back to those who have helped him along the way. Earlier this year he purchased 100 brand new helmets for the Texas Southern University football team, his alma mater.
