Former boxing champion Mike Tyson is set to make his return to the ring next month as he faces Roy Jones Jr.
The fight will take place in Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 28. It will be an “exhibition fight” for both fighters, who are in their 50’s. The Staples Center will provide the backdrop of the fight and it is expected to be empty during the match to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It will be the first sporting event at the center since the COVID-19 pandemic started.
Tyson, 54, is a former undisputed heavyweight world champion. He is the youngest boxer to ever win a heavyweight world title at the age of 20, according to Boxing Scene. Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout and is largely considered one of the greatest boxers of all time. In 1987, he became the first fighter to unify the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles.
Jones has also had much success in his career as a former champion in four weight divisions. He made history in 2003 by winning the WBA heavyweight title. He became the first former middleweight to accomplish the task in 106 years.
Mike Tyson Ready For Fight
Tyson, wearing a protective face mask the entire time, spoke to the media about the fight on Thursday. He says he is looking forward to stepping into the ring again to compete against Jones, Jr.
“You got Mike Tyson and Roy Jones,” Tyson said. “I’m coming to fight and I hope he is coming to fight. That’s all you need to know. This is something I have done my whole life, since I was 13-years-old. I am more evolved now than I have ever been.”
The heavily anticipated matchup is the first live sporting event produced by Tyson’s “Legends Only League.” Tyson’s venture provides support and infrastructure to the world’s greatest athletes, according to Boxing Scene.
