‘Monday Night Football’ Analyst Interviewing for Houston Texans, Detroit Lions GM Jobs: Report

Louis Riddick, who works as an analyst for Monday Night Football, may be doing more than talking about players and coaches in 2021.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Shefter first reported the news, Wednesday. The Houston Texans are interviewing Riddick for the general manager job. Riddick is expected to interview with the Detroit Lions for their general manager job as well.

Louis Riddick, 51, is a former player and executive. Although he’s worked for ESPN for seven years, this season was his first as an analyst for Monday Night Football.

“He’s good on all levels as a person, talent evaluations and leadership,” an AFC personnel executive told the Houston Chronicle. “I’m impressed with him all-around. I think he could really help the right organization.”

Another executive, this one in the NFC, told the Chronicle: “Smart guy, sharp, has the experience as a scout and he played the game. He’s obviously a great communicator. It’s good to see him get interviews and hopefully, he gets an opportunity.”

More Louis Riddick Background

Riddick knows how to work multiple levels of an NFL team, from playing to scouting to the front office. He even knows how it’s portrayed in the media.

Riddick played safety for four teams. The San Francisco 49ers selected him with a ninth-round pick in 1991. In all, he played for the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders.

The Texans are looking for both a head coach and a general manager. Team owners fired Bill O’Brien, who did both jobs, in early October.

Detroit is also looking for a new coach and general manager. Team owners terminated coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn last month.

Riddick knows the ins and outs of how to make an NFL team work.

He worked as a scout with Washington in 2001. Riddick earned a promotion to director of pro personnel in 2005. He left the team for Philadelphia, where, again, he first worked as a scout. The Eagles bumped Riddick to assistant director of pro personnel within a year. Riddick directed the department from 2010-13.
