NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace took to social media on Thursday afternoon to announce that he and Netflix have agreed to film a documentary.

NASCAR’s marketing and content development team has been hinting about new content. In fact, the content team’s manager, Matt Summers, said that several concepts were currently in development.

It turns out that the first of those new concepts was revealed on Thursday afternoon. Netflix recently announced that it had greenlit a documentary that will follow Bubba Wallace during his first-ever season at 23XI Racing.

“The series will take viewers behind the scenes of the 2021 NASCAR season through the eyes of the only black driver at the top level of the sport,” Netflix said in a statement. “[The show] will explore Wallace, 23XI Racing, and NASCAR’s efforts to advocate for inclusion and equality in racing and beyond.”

A release date has yet to be announced for the new documentary. However, Bubba Wallace made an announcement on his official Twitter page earlier today as well.

“You know me…I like to keep things real and raw,” Wallace wrote on Twitter. “Pumped to have @netflix capture these moments to share with you guys.”

Not the First NASCAR Documentary Centered Around Bubba Wallace

The recent announcement from Netflix and Bubba Wallace is most definitely exciting for all NASCAR fans. However, this is not the first time that a documentary has centered around Wallace. Back in 2018, a Facebook Watch mini-series aired prior to Wallace’s debut at the Daytona 500. That series ran for eight episodes.

NASCAR’s lead content man said back in February that they want programming that spotlights the intensity of competition.

“And that’s something that I feel NASCAR productions does better than any other sports league production is the kind of docu-style behind the scenes similar to Hard Knocks,” Summers said. “I think the MotorTrend series is exceptional. I think that’s something our fans want to see more of us. So, we have a lot of different projects in various stages of development that will highlight the real teams, drivers, the competition element of the sport itself.”

“Some things are close to coming into production and other things take a little bit of time.”

It sounds like the first of those projects is set to begin with the 23XI race car driver, Bubba Wallace. Make sure to follow along here on Outsider to get the latest news on the new Netflix documentary. Additionally, tune in to stay up to date on Bubba Wallace and other NASCAR stars.
