The driver made headlines when he announced he would race for 23XI, a new team formed by Michale Jordan. The NBA legend partnered with NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin to put the team together. They chose Wallace as their first and currently only driver for the 2021-2022 season.

Bubba Wallace Will Drive For 23XI in 2021

The team has been teasing the car reveal via a series of posts on Twitter in recent days. For instance, one tweet featured the car covered by a red sheet. Wallace will drive the car officially for the 23XI team in February 2021 for the Daytona 500.

Jordan named both the team and the car after his famous NBA jersey number. Jordan and Hamlin officially revealed the team name and car number on Oct. 23. In a statement on their website, they discussed why they chose Wallace to race for them.

“Bubba Wallace burst onto the national spotlight in 2020 as the social justice movement swept across America and Bubba took a stand in his sport,” the statement read. “Bubba has been breaking barriers since he entered the sport of NASCAR, becoming the first African-American driver in several decades to win a national series race and be a full-time driver in the premier NASCAR Cup Series. In 2021 Bubba will take the wheel of the No. 23 car.”

In a separate statement, Hamlin discussed his partnership with Jordan. Jordan has always been a fan of the motorsport. He will be the first black owner of a NASCAR team since 1971.

“Michael and I have a shared vision for this team,” Hamlin said. “So it’s exciting to see it reflected in the team name and on the race car with the iconic number 23 that Michael made famous.”
