On Monday afternoon, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace earned a historic win at Talladega Superspeedway. Today, his fiancée congratulated Wallace on social media and made sure to tell her future husband how “proud” she is of his accomplishment.
The 27-year-old is the first Black driver to win a Cup Series race since Wendell Scott won back in 1963. Inclement weather shortened the YellaWood 500 in Talladega, Alabama yesterday. But Wallace held off drivers Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher to take the checkered flag in the rain-delayed race.
The No. 23 driver has had an up and down year in Team 23XI’s first season on the NASCAR circuit. Wallace and his team have built some momentum thought in recent months with multiple Top 10 finishes. But his first Cup Series victory is the culmination of the team’s hard work and perseverance. Especially since critics doubted team owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin‘s driver choice from day one.
Now, Bubba Wallace has brought an almost 60-year drought to an end when it comes to a Black driver winning a Cup Series race. And Wallace’s fiancée, Amanda Carter, couldn’t be happier for her other half.
The pair celebrated his historic victory and captured the moment in a quick photo. Both are all smiles as they each hold up their pointer fingers in reference to his 1st place finish. In Carter’s caption, she also amusingly explained why her hair is wet in the photo.
“So incredible!!!!!!” Carter wrote on Instagram along with 22 checkered flag emojis. “So proud of @bubbawallace !!!!!! You did it, CUP WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!! I literally have no words!!! Thank you all for the kind messages!!! Oh and my hair is wet from a certain car chief dumping beer on my head.”
Michael Jordan Congratulates Bubba Wallace on Historic Win
NBA legend Michael Jordan is well-known for his need to win on the basketball court. Realistically, the six-time NBA champion wants to win at anything he’s involved in. Air Jordan‘s overwhelming desire to be the best at anything he does is as famous as his Jumpman symbol.
However, when he and Denny Hamlin created Team 23XI in the offseason, he knew there would be a learning curve. So after Bubba Wallace’s historic victory yesterday, there wasn’t anyone outside of Bubba himself happier to see the No. 23 car on victory lane than Jordan.
Last night, Jordan sent Bubba Wallace and their entire team a message congratulating them on their hard-earned win. The former Chicago Bulls shooting guard called it a “huge milestone” for their race team. Jordan said that he and Hamlin are both “proud” of Wallace and knew they were getting a winner when they signed him.
“I’m so happy for Bubba and our entire 23XI Racing team,” Jordan said in a statement on social media. “This is a huge milestone and historic win for us. From the day we signed him, I knew Bubba had the talent to win and Denny and I could not be more proud of him. Let’s go!”
