NASCAR Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer paid homage recently to the Kansas City Chiefs and the team’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Bowyer is a Kansas native and has always shown his pride and support for Kansas sports. He’s an avid Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Kansas Jayhawks fan. Prior to Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway, which would be his last, he added a new Chiefs decal next to his name plate. Bowyer currently drives the No. 14 Ford Mustang for Steward-Haas Racing.
Just before the race started Bowyer tweeted saying “Hey @Chiefs @PatrickMahomes @tkelce. Made a last minute adjustment to the roof of my car. Let’s Gooooooo!!!!!!” displaying a Kansas City Chiefs decal above the driver’s side window.
Hoping to bring Bowyer some luck, his race team, Stewart-Haas Racing, tweeted on Friday.
“The year kicked off with a bang for longtime Kansas City Chiefs fan Clint Bowyer. Think some of that Super Bowl winning luck will rub off on him for Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway? Here’s hoping!”
Unfortunately the luck didn’t come, as Bowyer finished 26th, well behind winner Joey Logano. But Bowyer still went out in style at his “hometown track.”
Earlier this year, the race car driver attended Super Bowl 54 in Miami and watched his Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. It was the first time for Bowyer, 41, to see his home team play in the NFL’s championship game. Prior to their victory, it had been 50 years since the team last made it to the big game.
Meanwhile, Bowyer announced earlier this that he would be stepping away from the driver’s seat next season and joining the broadcast booth. He will be working alongside Jeff Gordon and Mike Joy for Fox Sports.
During his 17-year career, Bowyer raced at the Kansas Speedway 32 times, including 24 NASCAR Cup Series Races. He also was a part of six Xfinity Series Races and two Gander Truck Series races – one of which that included a victory.
