NASCAR: Kyle Busch Earns Sunday Victory at Pocono in Touch-and-Go Finish

Popular NASCAR driver Kyle Busch took a chance at the end of Sunday’s Cup Series race at Pocono and it paid off with his second victory of the 2021 season.

On Sunday afternoon, NASCAR drivers lined up on the track for the Explore the Pocono Mountains 350. And while Kyle Busch is going home with his second win, the race was touch-and-go all the way up until the end. Busch actually found himself in a three-way race with William Byron and Denny Hamlin while nearing the final lap.

However, just about everyone was in need of a fuel up. Byron and Hamlin elected to head to the pit for fuel. But not Busch, the driver of the No. 18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing. He decided to gamble and stay on the track and it paid off with a checkered flag. The official NASCAR Twitter account posted a video after the race showing Busch riding into victory lane.

“Fuel? @KyleBusch has plenty!” the NASCAR Twitter account wrote alongside the video. “Rowdy is going to Victory Lane at @PoconoRaceway!”

Kyle Busch Comments on Second Win of 2021 NASCAR Cup Series

It probably didn’t happen the way Kyle Busch and his team drew it up, but in the end a win is a win. Just ask Alex Bowman after his wild finish over Kyle Larson at Pocono on Saturday.

“Have you ever had a more bizarre win in your life?” an interview asked Busch after Sunday’s win. “You were stuck in fourth gear for a hundred and some laps Kyle!”

“Yeah, stuck in fourth gear. ‘Bout out of gas,” Busch admitted. “Just savin’, just ridin’, just playing the strategy the best we could with what was given to us.”

Busch was proud of the way his team at Joe Gibbs Racing prepared him for Sunday and for all of the work they put in behind the scenes.

“Just can’t say enough about everyone on our team,” he continued. “Everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota, TRD, all the work that they’re putting in and everything.”

Meanwhile, both of the Pocono races from Saturday and Sunday just go to show that anything can happen in NASCAR. And as Kyle Busch points out, it’s not always the fastest car that comes out on top.

“Sometimes these races aren’t always won by the fastest car — I mean I still felt like we had the fastest car. Even though we were in the back and behind, and having to come through and persevere through being stuck in fourth gear and no clutch — it’s all burned out. There’s nothing left.”

“Thanks to Rowdy nation and all of the Kyle Busch up there for supporting and pulling for us,” he concluded. “This was really awesome to pull off another win here at Pocono and it feels good.”
