Washington Wizard’s point guard John Wall was too busy playing spades to pay full attention during a national television appearance on ESPN.
Wall recently agreed to be a guest on the latest edition of ESPN’s program Monday Tailgate with hosts Jason Fitz and Field Yates. A die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, Wall was supposed to take part in a Zoom interview ahead of Monday night’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals.
However, it was clear early on that the NBA star had something else on his mind during the interview. The Wizards point guard was in the middle of a game spades, which led to quite an awkward exchange when Yates asked him a question.
“Be honest, John. How much have you enjoyed seeing the Eagles, and also the Washington Football team, and also the Giants stumble out of the gates so far this season?” Yates asked.
Wall, too busy trying to set his friend in spades, missed the question entirely.
“Repeat that question, please. I’m sorry.” Wall said.
Evidently for Wall, a local game of spades cannot wait – not even for a nationally televised interview with ESPN. Surprisingly, neither Fitz nor Yates asked Wall about the card game being played. Instead, the hosts played it off as if it were just another interview.
Afterwards, Yates didn’t waste any time making light of the situation on Twitter.
“Some are calling this the best work of my career,” he joked.
In other news, according to Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, Wall reportedly won the game of spades. It seems his decision to focus on the game – despite being in the middle of a televised interview – might have paid off.
“Important: I just spoke to John Wall. He tells me he ended up winning that game of spades.”
Many fans on Twitter found the viral situation to be hilarious while others called Wall unprofessional and disrespectful.
Wall, a five-time All-Star, will enter his ninth NBA season in 2020-21. He spent all of last season rehabbing from a torn Achilles.
