The Denver Broncos ran into a peculiar situation on Sunday, the likes of which the NFL has not yet seen occur. The Broncos went to battle with the New Orleans Saints without a true quarterback suiting up for Sunday’s game.

The Broncos were unable to dress a quarterback for the game due to a COVID-19 scare that caused the team to place three quarterbacks on the reserve list.

Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles were ruled ineligible due to the league contact tracing protocols. The three quarterbacks had been in close proximity with fellow quarterback Jeff Driscoll, who was recently diagnosed with the highly contagious virus.

Without a true quarterback eligible to play, the team turned to practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton. Hinton, a collegiate quarterback at Wake Forrest, got the start and it did not go well.

The Broncos were blown out by the Saints with a final score of 31-3. It was a lot to ask of Hinton to switch positions in the middle of game week against one of the NFL’s best teams. Hinton completed only one of his nine pass attempts for 11 yards. He also gained seven yards on the ground as the Broncos mainly focused on their running game against the Saints.

NFL Fans Call For Elway to Suit Up

Numerous Bronco fans took to social media to express dismay over the team’s performance. Some also took the opportunity to praise legendary NFL Quarterback John Elway. Many fans, whether serious or joking, say they want to see Elway come out of retirement and suit up for the team. With the three quarterbacks expected to remain on the COVID-19 reserve list, it might not be the worst idea to suit up the now 60-year-old Elway.

Here are some of the best social media reactions to the Broncos current quarterback situation.
