Apparently, Kentucky tradition dictates the burning of couches after a monumental win like last night’s victory over the No. 10 Florida Gators.
The crowds went wild at Kroger Field after the Wildcats pulled off an epic last-minute win over the Gators. Kentucky pulled ahead of Florida right at the end of the fourth quarter and pushed hard to keep the other team out of the endzone in a dangerously close final few minutes.
When the game finished, the Wildcats and UK fans stormed the field in an incredible display. Their excitement might just come from the fact that this is only the second time Kentucky’s defeated Florida since 1986, and the first time at home.
Earlier today, BroBible reported that the fans soon petered out of Kroger Field and took to the streets of Lexington to celebrate instead. With those celebrations came the burning of several couches out in people’s front yards.
According to the local news outlet WKYT, two people received minor injuries and one person received treatment for a medical condition during last night’s celebration.
You can see the crowds piling up in the video below. Per the Lexington Herald-Leader, police arrested one man at 1:30 a.m. for alcohol intoxication. Both the police and fire departments responded to at least five incidents on State Street and Crescent Avenue. At one point, someone set a Florida Gator sweatshirt on fire that police quickly put out.
Some people at the scene reported seeing police in riot gear, but neither publication confirmed whether police used full riot gear to deescalate the Kentucky fans.
Kentucky Football Fans Decide They Want to Take on Alabama Next
While burning couches to celebrate their victory, Kentucky fans also got hyped up for a game that hasn’t yet happened this season. Apparently, the SEC East team feels prepared to take on the No. 1 team in the country, Alabama.
One partygoer celebrating last night captured what looks like hundreds of people chanting the same thing: “We want Bama! We want Bama!”
They surround one of the infamous burning couches as they taunt the SEC West team. Funnily enough, one person in the background of the video keeps saying, “No, you don’t! I promise you don’t!”
It would certainly be an interesting matchup. Currently, Kentucky isn’t ranked in the AP’s Top 25. But they’ve gone 5-0 against some pretty solid teams, including a Top 10 team, after last night. Alabama’s also 5-0, having also defeated the Florida Gators and now Ole Miss.
Next week, Bama battles it out against Texas A&M. Meanwhile, the Wildcats are preparing for LSU next weekend and No. 2 Georgia the week after that.
