Portland State football coach Bruce Barnum is an absolute legend. He followed through on one of the best deals we’ve seen in some time (possibly ever) for college football fans.

A week ago, the Portland State head coach made an appearance on a local radio show. It was there where he made a bold offer to anyone willing to come out and support his team — he would buy them as many beers as they could drink. That went for however many people showed up to the team’s home opener against Western Oregon on Saturday.

“I’ve got a deal for you,” Barnum said at the time. “Anybody who heard me [on] your show…just say, ‘I heard Barney on the BFT’ at the Barney Beer Garden, and I’ll buy your beer.”

Although he wishes he could have bought everyone’s tickets, he hoped that buying them their beer would be a nice consolation prize. And he had a great reason behind his wild offer — he wanted to do something to encourage people to come to watch his team play. He believes that 2021 is going to be a great season for the Vikings.

“I’ve got to get people to see my kids,” he said. “I like my team.”

So, did Coach Barnum follow through with his offer, you ask? You’re damn right he did. On Tuesday, he posted a receipt on Twitter showing that he coughed up $14,448 for a total of 2064 beers. That’s our kind of coach.

Portland State Fans Thank Football Coach for Free Beer

It’s not too often that the head coach of your favorite team or of a local team in your area offers to buy the entire fan base free beer. But not every head coach is Portland State coach Bruce Barnum. He is as genuine and, well, as generous as they come. As a result, fans who were at the game made sure to offer up their thanks on social media.

“Thanks, Coach! I enjoyed a few of them,” one fan wrote.

“Awesome….The price (and taste) of victory!” another person said. The Vikings were able to pull out their first win of the 2021 season with a 21-7 win.

“Hope people enjoyed the game and come back to enjoy more! I think it was a great idea,” another person explained.

This year will make it year seven for Bruce Barnum as the head coach for the Portland State football program. Overall, he has been with the team for 12 years now. Obviously, Saturday hit his pocketbook pretty hard, so there is no telling if he will offer the same deal any time soon. But he has already done it once so we’ll have to wait and see if he has any extra incentives lined up for next weekend.
