Just a year on from a devastating wreck on the final lap of the Daytona 500, Ryan Newman has again crashed.
This led to at least 10-15 cars all slamming into each other early on the race. As the commentator Clint Bowyer states, racing legend Jeff Gordon predicted a 21-car wreck at some point in the race, but this was just short.
“That was a lot of racecars and a lot of great racecars. I know Aric Almirola was one of the ones up front.
“Whenever that happens up front, it’s gonna take out a lot of them.”
Unfortunately, one of the drivers was Ryan Newman. He was the subject of the worse crashes in recent memory last year.
Coming down the final lap, Ryan Newman was bumped by Ryan Blaney sending the driver into the wall, before being hit by Corey LaJoie, which sent him flying. As the car rolled on the track, sparks flew in all directions, before eventually setting the vehicle on fire.
It took 15 minutes for Ryan Newman to be extracted from the car. He then spent days in a Daytona hospital due to a brain bruise. Fortunately, he ended up being okay. However, his return to Daytona is now over with this huge crash above.
While it may be unlucky for it to happen a second straight year, Ryan Newman can say thanks for it not being so brutal as his 2020 wreck.
