Saints’ Michael Thomas Deletes Tweet Suggesting He May Want to Leave New Orleans

In a now-deleted tweet, Saints’ wide receiver Michael Thomas hinted at wanting to leave New Orleans. Star quarterback Drew Brees is thinking about hanging up his cleats. There are several free agents on the Saints’ roster. To say that the future of the franchise is up in the air is an understatement.

Michael Thomas had a pretty unremarkable 2020 season. He spent most of the season on the bench. When he did hit the field, his performance was lackluster. During the Saint’s final playoff game against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Thomas didn’t make a single catch. It was after that ten-point loss that Thomas sent out the tweet that has fans and commentators scratching their heads and wondering if Michael Thomas wants out of New Orleans.

Michael Thomas’s tweet was the GIF of Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill telling Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans, “Help is on the way.” He posted the clip without comment.

Any meaning taken from the tweet is pure speculation. It could really mean anything. It could mean that Thomas wants to go to Tampa Bay or Kansas City. Maybe the Saints are looking at adding some “help” to their roster for the upcoming season. Thomas may have been wishing that Tyreek Hill was wearing the Saints’ black and gold.

We know two things for certain. Firstly, the tweet is gone. Second, Michael Thomas was blowing off steam after a disappointing loss.

Will Michael Thomas Leave New Orleans?

Whether or not Michael Thomas will leave New Orleans is still yet to be seen. We do know that he signed a five-year $100 million contract in 2019. So, the New Orleans Saints would have to make the final decision on whether or not Thomas moves on or not.

However, there is a good chance that the Saints will be keeping Michael Thomas in their ranks for a while. According to a pair of tweets from ESPN Senior NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints counted on Thomas even when he was injured. He would often miss practices and play in games at less than 100 percent. He reportedly had to take pain medication to stay in the game. At the same time, Saints coaches said that they were better off with him playing injured than without him.

The tweets also speculate that Michael Thomas will have several surgical procedures done in the offseason. The surgeries will repair his torn deltoid and damaged ligaments in his high ankle. Schefter speculates that Thomas did not have the surgeries this year for a simple reason: this is most likely Drew Brees’ last year. Thomas was hoping for a Super Bowl run alongside Brees.

If this is true, it is easy to see why Michael Thomas was so frustrated by the loss to the Bucs. No loss is easy. However, Thomas put his health on the back burner hoping to make it to the Big Game this year. Having that dream taken away while still being in pain had to have been tough.
