Sunday Night Football Ratings Continue to Skid With Rams-49ers Week 6 Matchup

The dip in NFL ratings has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2020 season and that continued again on Sunday Night Football.

This past Sunday, the primetime matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers experienced a drop in ratings as compared to last week. According to figures from Deadline.com, NBC’s primetime game saw 9.4 million viewers watch the Rams and 49ers play. Once again, that was a significant step down from Week 5. The Sunday Night matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings drew in 11.4 million viewers.

With that said, the NFL once again found itself losing viewers to another marquee game in sports. The Week 6 Sunday Night Football game competed with Game 7 of Major League Baseball’s National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves.

Similarly, the Seahawks and Vikings game from a week ago was broadcasted at the same time of Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat.

It’s important to note that the viewership numbers will be higher once the official numbers are in. Figures from the West Coast come in later and that’s especially noteworthy given that the Rams and 49ers are both based in California. However, the NFL more than likely saw another dip in viewership this week from Los Angeles because of the Dodgers game.

Viewer Count for Sunday Night Football:

  • Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers Week 6: 11.4 million
  • Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks Week 5: 15.1 million
  • Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers Week 4: 15.1 million
  • Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints Week 3: 16.6 million
  • New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks Week 2: 17.7 million
  • Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams Week 1: 19 million

In any case, the low viewership numbers match a reoccurring trend seen so far during the NFL season. Despite Sunday Night Football being NBC’s most-watched program each week since the start of the season, it’s not reaching the same numbers it did in 2019.
