Linebacker Jake Ehlinger, brother of former Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger and a Longhorn himself, was found dead on Thursday. He was just 20 years old.
According to the Austin Police Department, Jake Ehlinger’s body was found in the 1200 block of West 22nd Street. They received a call at 12:18 p.m. Central time, HookEm.com reported. No cause of death is available at this time. Police reportedly don’t consider the death as suspicious.
Ehlinger, the younger brother of newly-drafted Sam Ehlinger, was a sophomore for the Texas Longhorns. He, though, did not play after coming to the school from Austin Westlake High School.
Sam Ehlinger was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night. Jake Ehlinger was present for that moment. Take a look at the moment Sam receives the call from the Colts. Jake Ehlinger is in a burnt Orange shirt in the video, the colors of the Texas Longhorns.
Also, Jake’s picture happens to appear on TV screens and not Sam’s when the pick was announced. Texas Football shared the image on its Twitter account on May 1.
In other words, it happened during the NFL Network’s coverage. Sam loved it at the time, saying, “Good, good,” with a huge grin during his availability with reporters. “Jake deserves all the screen time you can get.”
Texas Longhorns Player’s Family Is Facing Yet Another Tragedy
This is not the first time tragedy has struck the Ehlinger family. Ross Ehlinger, Sam and Jake’s father, died in 2013 while competing at the Alcatraz Triathlon.
Responses from other teams’ Twitter accounts were coming in on Thursday afternoon.
Collin Johnson, who played his college ball for the Texas Longhorns, wrote, “Please pray for the Ehlinger family!”
GUNS UP NATION, which reports on Texas Tech University sports, wrote, “Extremely sad news out of Austin today. Our prayers are with the Ehlinger family.”
Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery wrote, “My condolences and prayers to the Ehlinger Family”.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, the Colts are doing their best to get Sam Ehlinger back to Austin today.
Jake Ehlinger was a two-time member of the Big 12 Conference’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll in fall 2019 and spring 2020.
Outsider sends its condolences to the Ehlinger family and the Texas Longhorns football program.
