Broadcaster Tony Romo is facing backlash after criticizing Antoine Winfield Jr. for taunting Tyreek Hill at Super Bowl LV.
During the Super Bowl on Sunday, players did not forget old grudges. When the Chiefs were looking for a change of pace to turn the game around, the Kansas City team went for it on a fourth-and-ten conversion.
When Patrick Mahomes threw the ball to receiver Tyreek Hill out of the pocket, the Buccaneers rookie Antoine Winfield Jr. threw some shade. As Winfield got right in the 26-year-old Kansas City receiver’s face, and he threw up the peace sign to Hill. Salt in the wound.
However, the sign wasn’t unprovoked. In Week 12, Hill burned Winfield, ran for a 75-yard touchdown, and originally threw up the gesture.
The difference? Antoine Winfield was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Hill received no repercussions the first time.
Winfield spoke to NBC Sports after the game, saying he doesn’t regret the sign and says it was something he had to do.
“The taunting, man, it’s something I just had to do,” Winfield said. “When we played them earlier, Hill went off on us. He back-flipped in front of my face and gave me the peace sign. So it was only right that I gave him the peace sign right back to him. It felt amazing to do that. I’m not even gonna lie.”
The Internet Disagrees with Tony Romo Over Antoine Winfield “Deuces”
Tony Romo condemned Winfield for the gesture, saying it was like “kicking a guy when he’s down.”
We are pretty sure that is the point. However, social media didn’t agree with the former quarterback either. They say that Hill had the revenge coming. Even ESPN jumped on board to show the comparison.
One user even said, “Regarding Antoine Winfield Jr. giving Tyreek the peace sign: ‘I don’t like or condone that’ – Tony Romo on the broadcast. ‘That’s absolutely perfect’ – everyone else in America.”
Despite the shade and deuces throw, the underdog Tampa Bay Buccaneers went on to crush the defending champions 31 to 9. The Super Bowl was Tom Brady’s fifth Super Bowl MVP and seventh Super Bowl Ring. Tyreek Hill has one Super Bowl win under his belt, as well as one for Antoine Winfield Jr.
