After a nail-biting win against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, the Washington Football Team decided to rub it in. In a hilarious Twitter post, the Football Team took a spin on a classic “The Office” scene. With the 23-17 win, the Washington Football Team tied the New York Giants for first in the NFC East. Oh, and they also thrashed the Steelers’ hope for a perfect undefeated season.
The simple caption, “W,” tells you everything you need to know.
The Washington Football Team Improbable Win
Going into the game, very few believed the then 4-7 Washington Football Team stood a chance against the mighty Steelers. With Alex Smith under center, who recently returned from a gruesome leg injury, the undefeated Steelers seemed like a very tall task. That didn’t stop the Football Team.
In a low-scoring punt-fest, the Football Team overcame a fourteen-point halftime deficit the beat the Steelers. This was only the second time the Steelers have let a team come back from that deficit since 2004. After bringing the score back to even at 17, the Football Team drove the field and kicked a field goal with a little over two minutes left. Then, a big Ben Rothlisberger pass got tipped at the line of scrimmage and picked off by. Washington hit the dagger with a Dustin Hopkins field goal with 20 seconds left in the game.
Pittsburgh Steelers Woes
When closely examining the Steelers’ 11-0 season coming into the game, the loss to the Football Team sort of checks out. In each of their eleven wins, the Steelers’ struggled in some capacity. In addition to their struggles, their strength of schedule was, well, weak. With the exception of a blowout win against the Browns early on in the season, the Steelers barely squeaked by all of their games against teams over .500. They also had several close games against teams under .500.
Today, their biggest issue against the Washington Football Team was dropped passes by the receivers. As much credit as you can give to the Football Team, the loss can also be attributed to the Steelers’ mishaps. They failed to capitalize on a fourth and goal at the one-yard line, they dropped several key passes throughout the game, and overall, they simply could not execute on third down. This loss will not seriously jeopardize their playoff chances, but it will make the AFC North division race interesting.
