Dustin Johnson was literally speechless following his 2020 Masters Championship win. Shortly after Tiger Woods placed the green jacket on his back, Johnson couldn’t hold back his emotions as the gravity of the situation sank in.
“It’s a dream come true. As a kid you always dreamed about becoming a Masters champion,” Johnson said before beginning to cry. “It’s just incredible, obviously, as you can tell.”
Johnson posted a 20-under-par, a Masters record, in his first win at Augusta National. He broke the previous low of 18-under set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and tied by Jordan Spieth in 2015, the PGA said.
It was a big performance as Johnson had previously floundered when leading late. Yardbarker said the 36-year-old was 0-4 in majors when he was ahead after 54 holes, but he was able to break that slump Sunday.
“I’ve never had this much trouble gathering myself,” he said, beginning to cry while speaking to CBS’ Amanda Balionis. “On the golf course I’m pretty good at it, but out here I’m not.
Johnson posted a short message on Twitter about the win.
Johnson finished ahead of Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im who both finished second at 15 under. Smith, 27, became the first player in Masters history to shoot sub-70 rounds on all four days, Sports Illustrated reported. Justin Thomas finished in fourth at 12-under overall. Dylan Fritteli and Rory McIlroy finished tied for fifth at 11 under overall
