Smith suffered a gruesome injury in 2018 that left many thinking he would never play football again. The 36-year-old and first overall NFL draft pick proved doubters wrong last month, taking the field in a game against the St. Louis Rams. The quarterback only managed to collect 37 yards passing on 17 passing attempts with nine completions.
The stats hardly tell the story of Smith’s heroic comeback though. Many, including Terry Bradshaw, couldn’t bear to watch Smith take the field after witnessing his devastating injury a few years ago.
“I couldn’t watch,” Bradshaw says in describing his feelings on Smith’s return to action. “I didn’t want you playing after what you’ve been through and I did not want to see you on that football field.”
The Kelly Clarkson Show provided Smith and his wife Liz with a platform to discuss his return and hopes for the remainder of his career.
“Today on Kelly, Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith and his wife @lizbsmith11 discus his miraculous return to the field after a life-threatening injury,” the show tweets. “And how their road to recovery inspires them to pay it forward.”
Smith Talks Return to the Game
Bradshaw would then ask Smith why he felt he need to be back on the field instead of hanging up his cleats.
“I get it. I definitely understand,” he says. “There was a long time when I couldn’t even think about getting back on that field and getting tackled again. I also spent a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of days sitting in a wheelchair, in a hospital bed, wondering if and what I’d ever be able to do again.”
Smith went on to say after considering his options he began to feel more comfortable with the idea of playing.
“I really felt like, how often do you get presented with something like this in life,” he said. “I couldn’t turn it down.”
