The inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday (Jan. 20) was acknowledged across the globe. And the sports world, including Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, took notice.
And, why wouldn’t they? Harris is a history maker.
Before becoming the Vice President of the United States, Harris was a U.S. senator from California. Prior to that, she served as the state’s attorney general and the district attorney of San Francisco. She is the first woman ever to serve as vice president. Harris is also the first Black American, as well as the first South Asian American, to be elected as vice president of the United States.
In recognition of her place in history, the Golden State Warriors created a special jersey in Harris’ honor.
In a video posted to the House of Highlights Twitter account, Stephen Curry displays an Oakland jersey and addresses Harris directly. “Madame Vice President, I’m not saying you’ve got to put this up in your office at the White House, but it would probably be a good idea,” Curry says in the video. “Congratulations on blazing your own path. We are all rooting and supporting you the whole way.”
The back of the jersey has “Madame VP” where a player’s name would normally appear. The jersey number is 49.

The video then cuts to Harris sitting with the now-framed “Madame VP” jersey.
“This means so much to me, you guys,” she says. “I will proudly, proudly display this in the office of the vice president of the United States, an office I am about to occupy. And, I cannot that you enough. And, you always bring such joy and pride to me as a daughter of Oakland. Be well. Be safe. This is really so very special. So, thank you all and I hope to see you soon. Go, Warriors!”
Next, the video shows a young girl wearing a #49 Oakland jersey as fans chant MVP. The familiar chant usually means “most valuable player.” However, in this case, it most likely stands for “Madame Vice President.”
The video then continues with a voiceover by Harris. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” she says.

Inauguration Day 2021 was an eventful one. Not only did Harris make history, but there was also music and drama and fashion on display. For example, former First Lady Michelle Obama stunned in an eye-catching outfit. Lady Gaga performed the National Anthem. Garth Brooks sang “Amazing Grace.” And, former President Jimmy Carter missed the inauguration for the first time in decades.
