In 2020, many people transitioned from on-site work to working from home. Now, more and more people and businesses are discovering the benefits of remote work. This year, one state will offer a stimulus check for remote workers. So, if you’ve been looking for a change of scenery, this might be the time to move.

Leaders in Vermont are hoping to grow their workforce. So, they’re offering major incentives to those who want to move to the Green Mountain State to work from a home office or co-working space. First, we’ll look at the stimulus check they’re offering for remote workers. Then, we’ll get into the qualification for the payments.

Vermont’s Stimulus Check for Remote Workers

The stimulus check for remote workers is actually a grant. The New Remote Worker Grant offers $7,500 to those who move to Vermont and work for an out-of-state employer, according to Think Vermont. The grant is available to those who move to Vermont on or after February 1, 2022. That is also when the application portal will go live.

Remote workers hoping to get this stimulus check have to be full-time residents of Vermont. Additionally, they must be employed full-time with an out-of-state employer and do the majority of their job remotely. Workers can use either a home office or co-working space inside the state. Furthermore, the worker’s wage must meet or exceed the state’s livable wage which is $13.39 an hour or $26,780 a year. Furthermore, workers have to be subject to Vermont’s income tax.

Also, workers have to incur certain costs when relocating. Those costs include hiring a moving company, renting moving equipment, buying moving supplies, shipping costs, and closing costs on a property or a lease deposit and one month’s rent. These are common expenses. So, most remote workers who move to Vermont should qualify for the grant.

Applying for the Payments

To apply for the stimulus check, remote workers will have to provide certain information. This information includes the employer’s name and address as well as the name and contact info of the company’s hiring manager.  Additionally, workers will have to provide a copy of their Vermont driver’s license as well as a copy of their pay stub. Applicants must also provide two pieces of documentation proving that they live in the state. These documents include a lease or mortgage agreement, a utility bill with a new service address, or homeowner or renter insurance.

The stimulus check for remote workers is paid as a reimbursement for costs up to $7,500. The funds for this grant are limited. As a result, payments are offered on a first-come-first-served basis.

The application period for the New Remote Worker Grant begins in February. Check out Think Vermont’s website to find out how to be notified when the application portal is available.
