There are a few cities and states that are continuing to provide COVID relief payments amidst the pandemic whilst we wait for federal relief. The child tax credit program finally ended mid-December after being started in July 2021. The Build Back Better plan is still up in the air. Thus, people are wondering if there’s anything they can do until more information is released about any future relief. Fortunately, some areas have financial relief available for those that need it.

The type and availability of aid vary state by state and city by city. Below, we’ve detailed what’s available and where.

COVID Relief Payments By City

If you live in Los Angeles, C.A., Chicago, I.L., New Orleans, L.A., Durham, N.C., or Newark, N.J., you may be eligible for a pilot program (or a similar relief program) through those cities.

The city of Los Angeles has officially launched a guaranteed income pilot program that will help out thousands of families. For 12 months, 3,000 families in the city will get $1,000 a month. The families that were selected for this program will be announced before the end of this month.

For those in Chicago, guaranteed basic income pilot program payments are expected to begin this year. Mayor Lightfoot’s budget has set aside $35 million for family assistance programs. Families could receive between $500 and $5,000 from the program.

New Orleans is offering teens and young adults $350 per month as part of a financial literacy program. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 16-24 and must either be unemployed or not enrolled in school. The payments last for 10 months.

Durham has started a program for those that have been previously incarcerated. Monthly payments of $500 will be sent out to 115 residents in the city. $700,000 for the program has in part been funded by Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter. To see if you’re eligible for the Excel pilot program, fill out this pre-screening form.

Lastly, Newark has expanded their guaranteed income pilot program. This means that 400 city residents will receive payments for two years. The payments will add up to equal $12,000. Half of the program participants will get $250 biweekly, whilst the other half will get paid $3,000 twice a year.

Payments Per State

California residents will soon be receiving their Golden State Stimulus II payment if they haven’t already. The payments started at the end of December and will finish before the month is over. Depending on the eligibility of residents, the check could range from $600 to $1,100.

Certain workers in New York will get a one-time relief payment of $2,750. This will only apply to around 36,000 workers in select industries, as part of the Tourism Worker Recovery Fund. There’s no application for this payment, as the state will reach out directly to those that are eligible.

Lastly, Indiana residents will receive a bonus $125 grant after filing their taxes this year. The payment must be claimed before April of 2022.
