On the air for 21 years and counting, ‘Survivor’ continues to find ways to spice things up. Controversy and drama have certainly swirled around the program in the past, but the newest debate is a hot one. The new “Do-or-Die” twist presented in Season 41.

What is Survivor’s ‘Do or Die’?

The new “Do or Die” twist changes the typical structure of Survivor. As usual, contestants have the chance to play in the immunity challenge and gain the protection that typically comes with that. However, the new do-or-die twist adds a condition to that. Whichever contestant drops out of the immunity challenge first then faces a 1-in-3 change of survival at tribal. If the contestant chooses the right box out of the three they are presented with, then their safety is earned and the vote continues on as expected. If the contestant chooses the wrong box, however, their torch is taken and tribal is over.

Not a Fan Favorite

Although the twist shakes things up in a way that the series has yet to see, many fans of the show don’t seem to like it. Some say the twist takes away from how the games’ structure and makes the relationships contestants develop irrelevant. One Twitter user, @ShannonGaitz says, “#Survivor41 is desperate for irrelevant scrambling, first with the hourglass & now with Do or Die. Opening a random box will never be as exciting as being blindsided, betraying an ally, making a move horribly or well. I wish #Survivor wasn’t bored of its own perfect formula.”

Other social media fans of the show share similar thoughts online, expressing distaste for the twist. One tweeter referred to do-or-die as “legitimately the worst survivor twist ever” and another called it “horrendously stupid”. User @AshsDreamland pointed out how the twist seemed to go against the basis of the game, tweeting “

Jeff: This is what #Survivor is all about seeing people live together and see how they interact

Also Jeff: Anyway, onto the do or die twist of random chance to see if Deshawn will stay in the game regardless of his relationships or gameplay thus far.”

Additionally, user @minutekilling points out the challenge wasn’t as clear and cut as it seemed, saying” C’mon, the Do or Die challenge is not the twist, why are people ranting how simple it was? The main “dangerous” twist was how brave are they to sit out an Immunity freaking challenge. Liana passing while at the bottom number just proves she has no game!”

Season 41 of Survivor has been filled with emotional moments. Fans will have to wait to see if the do-or-die twist will make a return in future seasons. Season 42 of Survivor will air on March 9th, 2022 on CBS!
