‘1883’: Why Taylor Sheridan Told Sam Elliott ‘You’ll Hate Me’

If you know the premise of “1883” then you can pretty easily come to the conclusion that the outdoor scenes were probably pretty tough. The Taylor Sheridan spinoff of “Yellowstone” is filled with tons of grit. And if you know Sheridan’s work, then you understand how he wants authenticity on his sets. This is why one time he told Sam Elliott to be prepared to “hate” him when they finished filming.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Elliott opened up about the filming process and how particular Sheridan is about the storyline. This means that he wanted to truly depict a 19th-century tale filled with all the original details.

In discussing making the show, the “1883” star explains that Sheridan warned him about the grueling process he was about to get into.

“It’s been wonderful and grueling at the same time. [Showrunner] Taylor [Sheridan] told me, ‘You’ll hate me at the end of this thing.’ There is no chance that is ever going to happen. But it’s a tough shoot. We shot in Fort West for almost two months in 106-degree temperatures. Montana was the complete opposite. Bitterly cold and freezing.”

He added that:

“Taylor is a brilliant writer. He is a genius. It is really inspiring on a lot of levels.”

“1883” Actress Goes to Extreme Levels for Sheridan’s ‘Authenticity’

In fact, Sheridan’s new drama is so authentic that actress Isabel May says she actually grew out her armpit hair to mimic the real time period. If this isn’t dedication, we don’t know what is.

May spoke about being “proud” of growing out her hair and having fun with the role.

“This is my real hair. I’m very proud of it,” the “1883” actress says, referring to her underarms. “It’s not that bad. Everyone was freaking out about it because all the ladies on set had to grow their hair out as well. I think it’s rather nice. What’s not great is the smell, I’m not gonna lie. It’s a whole other beast in 106 degrees. I carry around deodorant everywhere I go.”

Further, May says she knew going into the project how Sheridan wanted everything to be authentic.

“Taylor said from the very beginning, ‘I want everything to be authentic,’” May shared. “I mean, women didn’t start shaving until the 1920s. He really wanted that to be an aspect of the show, and so I was more than happy to oblige.”

“1883” premiered on December 19 on Paramount+. And if you’re a huge “Yellowstone” fan, you’re going to absolutely love the prequel. And the best part is that you can watch the two shows together and delve into the layers of the Dutton family from generation to generation.
