The Chicks at the DNC

The former Dixie Chicks gave their first show since their big name change. Members Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire performed an acapella rendition of our nation’s song. The show took place on the fourth and final night of the Democratic National Convention, where Joe Biden officially accepted the party’s nomination.

Their performance was done separately and virtually due to health concerns with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The women appeared on separate screens dressed in black with a green background. The trio had their hands on their chest and gave an out of this world vocal rendition.

The Chicks’ Name Change

On June 25, without notice, The Dixie Chicks changed their social media usernames to “The Chicks.” They announced that they will be removing the word “dixie” as it has the term has ties with slavery. The trio named the band in 1989 after the song “Dixie Chicken” by Little Feat. By 2003, they no longer liked their name.

Maguire confessed to The New York Times that they were teenagers when they picked the “stupid name.”

“We wanted to change it years and years and years ago,” Maines added. “I just wanted to separate myself from people that wave that Dixie flag.”

At first, the women did not feel like they could change their band name, given their success. Due to recent events, they realized how hurtful the term can be outside of the context of the song. Strayer shared that she was on Instagram when she discovered that the Confederate flag is dubbed “The Dixie Swastik.” “I don’t want to have anything to do with that,” she said.
