Let’s face it, we’re not always going to like all the people we work with during our careers. This was true for actress Shirley Jones who played the matriarch of “The Partridge Family.”
Jones played Shirley Partridge on the popular show which ran from 1970 to 1974. Shirley leads the family on its way to music stardom. In addition to its main cast, which also included star David Cassidy, “The Partridge Family” also had guest stars appear on the show during its run.
According to Parade.com, Jones wasn’t always a fan of these guest stars. Some of them she really enjoyed working with. Others, she did not. She reportedly talks about some of them in her 2013 book, “Shirley Jones: A Memoir.” And, interestingly, she names names.
“One of the joys of working on ‘The Partridge Family’ was the guest stars,” Jones wrote. Some of her favorite guest stars were Farrah Fawcett, Jodie Foster, and Rob Reiner.
Regarding Fawcett, Jones reportedly wrote that “everyone noticed what a great looker she was and predicted she would go on to be a big star.” Jones referred to Foster as “one of the finest child actresses I had ever worked with.” Reiner, Jones said, was “fun to work with” and “great.”
Shirley Jones Wasn’t a Fan of These Guest Stars on ‘The Partridge Family’
Who were the guest stars Shirley Jones didn’t enjoy working with? The names might surprise you. According to the article, Jones wasn’t a fan of Dick Clark, Richard Pryor, and Ray Bolger.
Jones wrote that she “didn’t like (Clark) very much. She described Pryer as “so drugged up that he never asked me a thing about myself.” And, Bolger was described by Jones as “a bit irritable and insisted that everything had to be his way.” Bolger is probably most famous for playing the “Scarecrow” in “The Wizard of Oz.”
Despite being annoyed with some guest starts, Jones very much enjoyed her time working on “The Partridge Family.”
“I was sad to see the show end. If it hadn’t been canceled, I would have been happy to carry on playing Shirley Partridge for another four years,” Jones wrote in her memoir. “For me and all the rest of the cast, this was the end of an era.”
According to Parade, “The Partridge Family” was nominated for five Golden Globe awards and one Grammy award. It was also a ratings success and remains a popular show to this day.
Below is just one example of a fun performance by “The Partridge Family” during its television run.
Shirley Jones Said She Turned Down Role of Carol Brady on ‘The Brady Bunch’
As Shirley Partridge, Shirley Jones portrayed one of America’s most loved television moms. Now, picture her as another TV mom – none other than Carol Brady.
Jones also talks about almost portraying Mrs. Brady in her memoir.
“While the idea of playing the mother in ‘The Brady Bunch’ was initially attractive to me, I turned it down because I didn’t want to be the mother taking the roast out of the oven and not doing much else,” Jones said.
Florence Henderson went on to play Carol Brady on the popular television show.
