An 11-year-old boy came to his grandmother’s rescue when she fell ill. PJ Brewer-Laye drove his grandmother Angela Brewer-Laye using the family’s Mercedes-Benz.
Angela took her grandson on a family outing. He drove around in his go-cart while she walked for exercise. The two were about a mile and half away from Angela’s house.
“This child is only 11 years old and drives like a pro,” Angela told 11Alive. “He always rides either his four-wheeler, go-kart or his dirt bike while I’m trying to get a little exercise in.”
While walking, Angela felt ill. She became dizzy and could not see clearly. She had to lean against a stop sign to avoid falling down.
“I was leaning against the stop sign, and all of a sudden, I look to my right, and I see my car — my Mercedes-Benz coming towards me. Just in an easy, calm manner, it was coming towards me,” the woman said. “I looked in the car. It was him — it was PJ.”
The 11-year-old traded his go-cart for the Mercedes-Benz.
The 11-year-old had driven his go-cart home and traded it for the Mercedes-Benz. He picked up his frail and surprised grandmother, driving her back to the house. PJ had learned to operate an automobile under his grandfather’s close watch. Sometimes PJ would rearrange the cars in the driveway or yard, but this had been his first time out on the road.
“He drove me home, and he pulled in the driveway. And when I say he pulled in the driveway so precise, because my driveway is kind of narrow … He didn’t go up the curb, in the grass, nothing. He pulled in the driveway, in the garage, and helped me out the car,” said Angela, adding that he was “calm and collected.”
PJ helped his grandmother in the house and gave her some glucose tablets and peanut butter until she felt better. His grandparents rewarded his heroic efforts by taking him out to eat.
“He’s an extra special little boy and he doesn’t ask for anything in return,” Angela said.
