The upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV is on the way and comes jam-packed with unique features that make this new electric SUV and pickup extremely appealing.

Hummers are known for their ruggedness and for originally being used as military vehicles. However, in the ’90s, General Motors bought the rights to the Humvees and began producing them for the civilian market. After stopping production of the civilian version of the vehicles in 2006, GMC is now back with another series that’s sure to turn heads.

The GMC Hummer EV is not only electric but doesn’t skimp on the size, power, or speed. The upcoming SUV and pickup editions of the automobile come chock-full of features that are sure to interest drivers. One of the most fascinating modes that are included is the new “Crab Mode” feature.

According to GMC’s website, the CrabWalk mode is a revolutionary setting that utilizes Hummer EV’s 4-Wheel Steer. The SUV and pickup’s rear wheels are able to turn up to 10 degrees in either direction. This allows the electric vehicles to drive diagonally at low speeds to traverse tight trails and spaces, unlike any other SUV or pickup on the market.

The CrabWalk is one of a series of drive modes featured on the new Hummer. The car also has an Extract Mode, which activates its Adaptive Air Ride Suspension. The mode raises the vehicle 6 inches “to surmount tough obstacles – think traversing boulders or fording water,” GMC’s website shares.

Further features of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV include a Watts to Freedom mode, which the company calls its “moonshot.”

“Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement. It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else – purpose-built for straight-line fun,” GMC Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser explained.

The feature supposedly allows the electric vehicle to hit 60 mph in only three seconds. Each of the three drive features are collected on a dial in the center console near the gear shift. The drive mode selector also includes a fourth feature that is simply a suggestion box for drivers to share feedback with GMC.

Automotive-based YouTube reviewer Doug DeMuro showed car enthusiasts their first in-depth look at the new electric vehicle and its unique features on Thursday. He tested out the pickup version of the Hummer EV and said it’s the best-riding truck he’s ever ridden in.

“The one thing I’m surprised about, especially in this vehicle, is the ride quality,” DeMuro said. “This definitely rides better than Rivian, it definitely feels more comfortable than that. There’s no question about that. It has a more luxury car feel to it. Really, really impressively so.”

When reservations for the first edition of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV released this fall, they sold out within minutes. Even with a price tag of $112,595, drivers couldn’t scoop them up quick enough. For those still interested, you’ll have to wait for the variant of the vehicle to release in the fall of 2022 for $99,995.
