In a shocking statement Monday, Bill and Melinda Gates have announced jointly that they will divorce after 27 years of marriage.
Just weeks after making a public statement together for “One World: Together At Home” presented by Global Citizen on April 18, 2020, Bill Gates and Melinda Gates have announced their decision to separate.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship… We have made the decision to end our marriage,” the Gates begin in the statement.
“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they continue in reference to their Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In addition, the Gates state that they will “continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” the statement concludes.
Bill & Melinda Gates Divorce Shocks the World
The divorce comes as a shock as the Gates’ recent appearance on “One World: Together At Home” was highly publicized. The former couple also appeared together in the global broadcast and digital special sitting side-by-side on a couch. They did so in order to support frontline healthcare workers and the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. The event came for the World Health Organization, courtesy of the UN Foundation.
Both Bill & Melinda Gates are sharing the divorce announcement separately to their Twitter accounts. Each statement is live as of mid-day Monday, May 3, 2021:
Bill and Melinda Gates began dating in 1987 after meeting in New York, NY. From there, the two would marry in a private ceremony in 1994. In addition, the Gates had three children: Jennifer, Phoebe, and Rory Gates.
