The case of both Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie are still left unanswered questions.
On September 19, authorities located Petito’s body in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. They determined that the cause of death was strangulation. Following this conclusion, a massive manhunt began in order to locate the No. 1 suspect in the case, Brian Laundrie.
The two were on a cross-country road trip together when Laundrie suddenly returned to his Florida home without Gabby or the van. He then was hiding from authorities about two weeks after returning home. Eventually, his remains were spotted in a heavily wooded Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port.
Brian Laundrie Cause of Death Revealed
The dental records confirmed that the remains did in fact belong to Laundrie after this weeks-long hunt for the fugitive. Now, a statement from the Laundrie family attorney shares that the cause of death is a gunshot wound to the head. His death is a suicide, according to NBC News.
This is all about a month after the initial autopsy of his remains from October 20. At the time, it was not immediately clear how he had passed away. Investigators called in a forensic anthropologist in order to study the remains further.
Laundrie also had his notebook and other personal items located near his body. The FBI has the notebook in their possession and is working to find clues in the water-damaged book.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide. Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families,” the family’s attorney, Steven Bertolino said, according to WFLA.
The case continues to garner massive media attention. This was especially the case after his initial autopsy came back inconclusive. He was the only person of interest in Gabby Petito’s murder. He faced charges of debit card fraud after withdrawing money from her account.
More Information on Notebook
Due to Laundrie’s death, authorities still have many questions regarding his role in Gabby Petito’s death.
Authorities are hoping that Laundrie’s notebook could shed a light on it all.
“If that notebook contained, for example, information that could have been admissions, it could be projecting blame or rationalization, all that information could help in the determination,” former FBI profiler Jim Clemente said to CNN.
The FBI wanted to dry it as best as possible before opening in order to salvage what is written inside. It was Laundrie’s father that picked up the bag during the investigation and directly handed it to law enforcement. This has caused some people to feel skeptical regarding the involvement of the parents in the case.
