An artist unveiled a new statue commemorating First Lady Melania Trump. The statue consists of bronze. It replaces a wooden statue that arsonists set on fire in July. The monument stands in Trump’s native country Slovenia.
“We are here today because we put up again a statue of Melania to the place where it was burnt and to commemorate the statue that was set on fire,” said Slovenian artist Marko Vivoda.
According to Yahoo News, Trump was born in Novo Mesto in 1970. Her birth name is also Melanija Knavs. The first lady lived in Sevnica back when Slovenia was part of the Communist-ruled country, Yogoslavia. Since then, Slovenia became a member of the European Union and NATO. The country has a population of 2 million.
The new sculpture is a replica of the original wooden statue, which an artist placed in Sevnica. American artist Brad Downey designed the original in 2017. He commissioned the statue to local artist Aleš “Maxi” Župevc. Maxi sculpted the life-sized figure from the trunk of a linden tree. The statue featured a blue dress. Downey modeled it after the one the first lady wore to Donald Trump’s inauguration. Otherwise, the statue was featureless with no obvious resemblance to Melania Trump.
Arsonists burned down the original statue of Melania Trump.
Arsonists burned down the original wooden statue earlier this year on July 4th. The arsonists torched the statue’s face. Given the importance of the date, Downey said he believed the fire had been a political statement.
“Last year, out of precaution, I made a silicon mold of the statue,” Downey told ABC earlier this year. “I will have to come back with a conceptual, artistic reply to the arson to keep the conversation going – maybe make a proper bronze statue in that same location.”
A plague near the new statue also honors the original. The plague read, “[The statue is] dedicated to the eternal memory of a monument to Melania which stood at this location.”
