Avanti Frozen Foods is the company involved in the recall which includes cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp products sold all across America. Those products came in a variety of packages, sizes, and were sold between November 2020 and May 2021.

A recent update was given to the FDA recall alert. It now reads, “This recall expansion has been initiated out of an abundance of precaution and will cover a large amount of product that has not been associated with any illness but been undertaken following discussions with FDA and CDC and reflect Avanti’s commitment to Public health and safety.” The FDA keeps an updated list on their site for all products involved in the recall.

Included in the recall are brands such as Whole Foods’ 365 brand of products. Meijer and Food Lion products have also been affected by the FDA recall. Those cases occurred in Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, and Rhode Island.

FDA Recall Due to Salmonella

While getting it is rare, contracting salmonella can be extremely dangerous. As of now, there have not been any deaths reported due to the recalled products. However, symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, and fever and can lead to death. In very severe cases, salmonella can cause other illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The best thing to do is to go to the FDA website and read the information for yourself. Checking the freezer for these products will help prevent contracting the disease. If there are any recalled products in your home, do not consume them and take the risk. Part of the expansion of the FDA recall is to non-infected foods. Check labels and dates to make sure your food isn’t infected. Salmonella can be very dangerous to young children and those pregnant.

Salmonella can be spread easily from workers and food handlers. If there are not proper hygiene procedures taken, an infection can occur. Hand washing and cleaning surfaces are important to prevent infections. The illness can also happen when people eat raw or undercooked foods, such as shrimp. The FDA recall could expand further in the future depending on how many people get sick.
