Nearly a month since authorities located her body, autopsy reports have finally concluded 22-year-old vlogger Gabby Petito’s cause of death. The young woman’s death, ruled a homicide several weeks ago, reportedly resulted from strangulation. Teton County Coroner, Dr. Brent Blue, confirmed the cause of death Tuesday during a press conference.
Following the release, the Laundries’ attorney continues to provide little information via the family during the ongoing investigation. He shared what Gabby Petito’s biological mother, Nicole Schmidt, deemed a “garbage” statement.
She reamed the attorney, and the Laundrie family at large, stating during the conference, “His words are garbage. Keep talking.”
Prior to the scorching response, Attorney Steve Bertolino said, “Gabby Petito’s death at such a young age is a tragedy.”
He continued with the narrative the family has output from the start and throughout investigative developments. Bertolino added, “While Brian Laundrie is currently charged with the unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Gabby, Brian is only considered a person of interest in relation to Gabby Petito’s demise.”
Disregarding the autopsy results entirely, the attorney concluded, “At the time Brian is still missing and when he is located we will address the pending fraud charge against him.”
According to The Sun, Gabby Petito had not been pregnant at the time of death. The outlet further reported authorities were unable to release a toxicology report at the time.
Additionally, a private investigator suspected asphyxiation as the cause of death soon before official announcements went public. The individual referenced Petito’s body language in footage from the August 12th domestic violence call. They stated Gabby had dipped her chin toward her chest, an action meant to discourage someone from grabbing her throat. The motion comes as a defensive tactic from someone who has been choked before.
Gabby Petito’s Body Found Weeks After Initial Death
The latest autopsy reports have revealed more than just the exact cause of death. While we now know the young woman died via strangulation, the Teton County Coroner further shared authorities had found Petito’s body found three to four weeks following her death.
Based on the latest information then, Petito’s potential time of death lies between August 22nd and August 29th. The time frame lines up with crucial investigation milestones, including the last potential sighting of Gabby Petito on August 27th.
The crucial date comes via witnesses who claim they saw Brian Laundrie in an “explosive” argument with staff at a Jackson Hole restaurant. The fugitive reportedly left Gabby in tears.
The time frame also includes the last confirmed sighting of Gabby Petito as she left a Salt Lake City hotel. The following day marked the last time she FaceTimed her mother alongside some “strange texts” sent in between.
Now, after four weeks missing and a potential connection to the strangulation of Gabby Petito, authorities must strengthen their efforts to locate the person of interest. Although considering the lack of leads, the FBI as well as contributing law enforcement remain under further pressure to locate Brian Laundrie.
