Gabby Petito Case: Couple’s High School Friend Says ‘They Were Living the Dream’

Things aren’t always what they seem. In the case of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, things appeared to be completely normal. Even beyond the surface layer of their social media, the objects in the mirror were hard to gauge. People who knew the couple had no idea that something was amiss.

To be clear, we still don’t know what happened between Petito and Laundrie. What we do know is it looked like Gabby and her fiance were having the time of their lives.

The tragic reality is that thousands of people go missing in the United States every year. But the case of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie has captured national attention in part due to the documentation of their adventures on social media. Of course, people are more likely to portray themselves in the best possible light when there’s an audience involved. But many of the people who knew them personally couldn’t have guessed something like this would have happened.

Petito and Laundrie had known each other for years. They met in high school and dated off and on since then. According to People, their friends didn’t suspect anything sinister going on in the couple’s relationship. Ben Matula and Alyssa Chen, friends of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie from high school, talked to the outlet about the situation.

“All of their friends are either still in college or searching for entry-level jobs. They were living the dream that we all want. They were having the adventure of a lifetime,” said Matula. “It seemed like they were seeing the world with the person they loved.”

“I never saw any sort of physical abuse,” said Chen. “They had very high highs and very low lows. But she always said he was a good boyfriend.”

The Search For ‘Person of Interest’ Brian Laundrie Continues, Net Widens

It’s important to remember that everyone is innocent until they’re proven guilty. But with the recent autopsy results reportedly confirming that the body discovered in Wyoming indeed belonged to Gabby Petito, Laundrie’s absence looks increasingly suspicious.

We are not making any accusations. But law enforcement is understandably keen to find and question Laundrie to figure out what may have happened to Gabby Petito. The nationwide search began in Florida. Laundrie’s parents told authorities that their son was going camping in the area.

Now, the net has widened significantly. Numerous reports have rolled in from Alabama and other places across the country.

“It’s really hard to find people even when they want to be found,” Chris Boyer of the National Association for Search and Rescue told CNN. “The search area starts to grow every hour he could be in a car or be on foot,” Boyer said. “It gets pretty daunting, to be honest.”
