GMC’s brand new Hummer EV is currently being delivered to those lucky enough to snag one from the first round of orders. As more details are released about the updated electric Hummer, one wild feature has recently been revealed. The 1,000-horsepower pickup version of the Hummer is extremely powerful. So much so that it can lift its front end and pop a wheelie, according to Hummer EV’s chief engineer.

Recently, Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser spoke to The Drive about GMC’s newest electric vehicle. He shared that while testing the new vehicle, he unexpectedly got the front end to lift off the ground.

“In the early days, when we were just trying to balance the front and rear torque, I got the front end to lift,” Oppenheiser told The Drive. “We had to back off the torque on the front end.”

However, for “functional safety reasons,” the production versions aren’t equipped to pop a wheelie. Oppenheiser explained that production versions of the Hummer EV can do wheelies, but not in their current stock form. The chief engineer said that GMC decreased the power to prevent wheelies for a safer ride. Yet the cars could technically be tuned to perform the trick.

One new feature that is included on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is called Watts to Freedom (WTF). The new electric vehicles have a performance mode that boosts the acceleration of the Hummer to 60 mph in around three seconds. In fact, President Joe Biden test drove the Hummer EV in November and demonstrated the Watts to Freedom mode with GM CEO Mary Barra along for the ride.

“This sucker is something else,” President Biden said to reporters. “This is three times as heavy as my Corvette and three times as fast.”

GMC Hummer EV Will Include New Feature Called ‘CrabWalk Mode’

GM’s revamped Hummer series as an electric truck and SUV is one of the hottest vehicles on the market right now. That’s in due part because of numerous unique features that are included in the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. Arguably the craziest new feature on the vehicle is the new “CrabWalk” drive mode.

According to GMC’s website, CrabWalk is a revolutionary driving mode that utilizes 4-wheel steering. Each of the new SUVs and pickups have rear wheels that will turn up to 10 degrees. This allows the electric vehicles to travel diagonally – like a crab – at low speeds to traverse tight trails and spaces.

Over the fall of 2021, GM opened up the initial round of reservations for the first edition of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. Drivers scooped up the reservations in a hurry as the new Hummers sold out within minutes. And they weren’t cheap since the first edition released for $112,595. Customers who are still looking to order the new Hummer will have to wait. A second version of the Hummer EV will release for $99,995 in the fall of 2022.
