Following the surprising news of Bill and Melinda Gate’s divorce after 27 years of marriage, daughter Jennifer took to Instagram to share a statement.

In the post she made to her story, the 25-year old asked for privacy and space as the family worked through this period. And she thanked people for their support.

“It’s been a challenging stretch of time for our whole family. I’m still learning how to best support my own process and emotions as well as family members at this time, and am grateful for the space to do so. I won’t personally comment further on anything around the separation, but please know that your kind words and support mean the world to me,” she wrote.

Jennifer Gates is currently a medical student at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine in New York. She is the oldest of the Gates’ children. And she has two siblings, her 22-year old brother, Rory, and 19-year old sister, Phoebe.

“Thank you for understanding our desire for privacy while we navigate the next phases of our lives. With love and respect, Jenn xx,” she continued writing on her story.

Jennifer Gates is Recently Engaged

In stark contrast to her parents’ situation, Jennifer is just beginning a marriage of her own. Just a few months ago, Jennifer and Nayel Nassar got engaged. On January 29, she posted a photo to confirm it. Nayel and Jennifer both attended Stanford and are fellow equestrians. Nassar is a professional showjumper and has competed in the Olympics for Egypt.

“Nayel Nassar, you are one of a kind. Absolutely swept me off my feet this past weekend, surprising me in the most meaningful location over one of our many shared passions. I can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives learning, growing, laughing and loving together,” part of the caption read.

So at least Jennifer will be able to seek comfort in her own relationship. Even though she and her siblings are all adults, there is nothing easy about divorce, especially for the children. And despite the hundred-plus billion dollars her family is worth, none of that can heal the emotional strain. Fortunately, it looks like Bill and Melinda’s split is mutual, and the family is all still on good terms.
