A newly surfaced video shows Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden calling Air Force troops “stupid b******s” during a 2016 speech. According to the Biden campaign, the former Vice President made the comments “in jest.”
On March 7, 2016, Biden delivered a speech to 1,000 members of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing in Abu Dhabi, the Daily Beast reports. At the time, Biden still served as the Vice President under Barack Obama.
Biden’s wife Jill accompanied him for the speech. She offered remarks prior to Biden’s speech. 1st Lt. Karen Johnson introduced Joe Biden to the stage where he then made the controversial joke.
“I have incredibly good judgment,” Biden said to the crowd. “One, I married Jill. And two, I appointed Johnson to the academy. I just want you to know that. Clap for that, you stupid b******s.”
In the video, a handful of service members laughed while others lightly applauded.
Biden continued by adding: “Come on, man. Man, you are a dull bunch. Must be slow here, man. I don’t know.”
Thereafter, Biden delivered kind remarks about Johnson and thanked the service members who attended the speech.
“I want to thank Brig. Gen. Orcutt for welcoming me and my family here today” he said. “I know your ops tempo out here is pretty high and you got better things to do than come see Jill and me, but we never pass up an opportunity wherever we are around the world to try and see our warriors.”
The Joe Biden Campaign’s Response
Andrew Bates, the Biden campaign spokesperson, released a statement to the Daily Beast saying he made the comments to “jokingly encourage the audience to clap.”
“Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and a number of service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment. Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices [they] make for our country,'” Bates said.
