Man Named Tyler Childers (Not the Singer) Arrested for Possession of Drugs, Sword and Dead Deer

Certain names conjure images in our minds. When you think of the name Elvis, you probably think about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The name George Jones probably puts the image of the “He Stopped Loving Her Today” singer in your mind’s eye. Likewise, Tyler Childers will bring up the red-haired country singer from Kentucky. Even though there are billions of people in the world and we’d expect several people to share the names of famous figures, we never imagined that the name Tyler Childers would be connected to a guy who was arrested for having meth and a dead deer. But here we are.

Many of Tyler Childers’ (the singer) music contains references to hard drugs and less-than-legal activities. From songs about drinking and doing coke on the road like “I Swear (To God)” to murder ballads like “Banded Clovis,” the country singer is no stranger to singing about skirting the law. A news report from Elkins, West Virginia fills us in on a different Tyler Childers altogether.

Tyler Childers, West Virginia Man, Seeing Hard Times

According to the report, Elkins PD saw a gold Chevy Blazer almost hit another car while making a turn. They flipped on the lights and pulled over the Blazer. What started out as a routine traffic stop got weird in a hurry.

When officers approached the car, they were hit with the strong smell of decay. One of the first things the officers noticed upon stepping up to the driver’s side window was a large sword near the driver’s seat. After asking the driver, 46-year-old Rebecca Chandler, to step out of the car, they made another discovery. Chandler had a green tube hanging out of her pocket. When asked about it, she stated, “Oh sh-t. I forgot about that. It’s just weed.” Luckily for her, “just weed” is just a misdemeanor in West Virginia.

Tyler Childers, the 27-year-old passenger wasn’t quite as lucky. The officers took him out of the car and patted him down. While doing so, they found a syringe in his shirt pocket. After a further pat-down, they found over a quarter ounce of methamphetamine separated into multiple different baggies. This distinction elevates it from possession to possession with intent to distribute. It’s going to take more than a Hank song to ease his pain once he’s in front of a judge.

It Keeps Getting Stranger

Once they were detained, the police could turn their attention to the tarp in the cargo compartment. They knew that it was the origin of the smell of death wafting from the vehicle. Officers discovered a whitetail doe that appeared to have been shot. I can only imagine the officers’ relief upon finding the deer carcass. The way that the traffic stop was going, it could have been so much worse.

To add to the strangeness, both Tyler Childers and Rebecca Chandler denied knowing that the deer was there. Just how high do you have to be to not know a dead deer is stinking in the back of the Blazer?

In the end, authorities charged both Childers and Chandler with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. They’re currently in Tygart Valley Regional Jail with $30,000 bonds.
