Announcing they would be trimming their menu in the United States due to the pandemic, as well as supply shortages, McDonald’s has removed six items off their menu within the past year.
Variations of the iconic Big Mac burger, the Little Mac and the Double Big Mac, were originally available at participating restaurants. Sadly, the two burgers quickly disappeared and have not returned to the McDonald’s menu since.
Grilled chicken sandwiches and chicken tenders also vanished from the menu. Originally intended to be a temporary cut, there’s a chance both items may never return, according to CEO Chris Kempczinski.
“We will certainly add things back to the menu. Whether it goes all the way back to where we were pre-COVID, I think that’s probably unlikely.”
Never having been a huge seller, McDonald’s removed salads from the menu too. Noting their lacking popularity, Bill Garrett, McDonald’s senior vice president of operations, explained the reasoning to Business Insider.
“To simplify operations in our kitchens and for our crew, and ensure the best possible experience for our customers, we are working with our franchisees and local restaurants to focus on serving our most popular choices and will begin temporarily removing some items from the menu.”
Finally, yogurt parfaits are no longer available. As such, only fries and apple slices are available as sides.
It should also be noted McDonald’s All Day Breakfast hasn’t made a complete return either, though the company has acknowledged requests asking for it.
McDonald’s Menu Item Additions
While the chain took many staple items off its menu within the past year and even pulled a deceptive advertisement, McDonald’s also added new items.
Debuting on September 1, a new pull-apart donut will join the breakfast menu. Appearing at most restaurant locations, the chain promises to serve them warm.
Meanwhile, Canadian locations recently got the Maple Bacon Quarter Pounder. Similar to a standard Quarter Pounder, this variation is made with 100% Canadian beef. Additionally, McDonald’s adds a “creamy maple BBQ sauce,” hickory-smoked bacon, and processed cheddar cheese to it. Crispy onions are also available, should you want them.
In case that sandwich isn’t quite enough, a Double Maple Bacon Quarter Pounder is available. As one might expect, it’s the same burger with an extra patty.
Finally, though not officially a menu addition, there are “secret menu” items you can order from McDonald’s. A TikTok video shared earlier this year revealed the chain possesses sheet cakes. Selling them for $9 apiece, some locations carry sheet cakes for “special occasions,” such as employee or customer birthdays.
The chances of a restaurant having the cakes are slim, but it never hurts to try if you’re in the mood for some.
