Another fast-food chain has been working around the cluck to develop a new menu item in the ongoing chicken wars. A purveyor of all things poultry-related, Popeyes now has its eyes on chicken nuggets.
On Tuesday, the popular chicken sandwich chain announced it was adding chicken nuggets to its menus nationwide. Now, it appears Popeyes is hoping to steal some of Chick-fil-A’s customers with its new recipe. The nuggets are coated with the same batter as their famous chicken sandwich, which started the chicken sandwich feud back in 2019.
Customers can get their hands on the new nuggets beginning on July 27. The nuggets are marinated for 12 hours, battered and breaded with buttermilk, and fried with the chicken sandwich seasoning. They will also be available in quantities ranging from 4-piece to 36-piece orders in-store. However, customers who use the Popeyes app or order online can order up to 48 nuggets.
“Just like our game-changing Chicken Sandwich, our new Chicken Nuggets are unlike anything you may have experienced before,” Sam Siddiqui, president of Popeyes, said in a press release.
“We aim to show the world once again the magic of Popeyes chicken with our new nuggets. We believe that these pieces of crunchy, juicy, delicious chicken will have guests question how they ever enjoyed chicken nuggets before this.”
The white meat chicken breast nuggets will also be available in a classic flavor and paired with sauces, including Bayou Buffalo, BoldBQ, Blackened Ranch, Buttermilk Ranch, Mardi Gras Mustard, and Sweet Heat.
Popeyes Passes the Gauntlet in Ongoing Chicken Wars
Two years ago, Popeyes started what would become an ongoing battle when it started a Twitter feud with Chick-fil-A. The rivalry was about which chain held the title of the best chicken sandwich.
At the time, Popeyes’ Twitter account tweeted out “y’all good?” in response to a tweet Chick-fil-A had posted about its original chicken sandwich.
Following the launch of Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, people across America flocked to stores to try the new item. Within three weeks of the launch, Popeyes completely sold out of the sandwich. However, Popeyes put it back on the menu in October 2019 and is now offered as a permanent menu item.
The chain has also already tried to recreate the success of its chicken sandwich with another product. Earlier this year, Popeyes introduced a fish sandwich. Popeyes made the sandwich with the same bun and pickles used in its chicken sandwich but offered it only for a limited time. Jose Cil, CEO of Popeyes’ parent company Restaurant Brands International, called the item “a great complement to our chicken sandwich.”
Since the debut of Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, other chains such as McDonald’s and Burger King have tried incorporating their own spin on the classic item.
