Near the top of the list of executive orders that President Joe Biden has signed in his first days of office is the “Buy American” agenda. This executive order builds from what he campaigned on throughout last year.

The plan is fairly simple when it boils down to it: buy American. In doing so, they plan to bolster American manufacturing and keep spending within the United States.

This means directing government spending toward American products. For example, President Joe Biden promised to replace the government’s fleet of vehicles with American made electric cars. This will happen over the course of the next few years, but will also help fight climate change. President Biden made it clear that the fight against climate change remains a primary objective on his presidential agenda.

This means more than simply buying American cars. The executive order signed by President Joe Biden promises to have “clear directives” and a “coordinated effort” in the plan.

That is, beyond what was put in place by former President Donald Trump, according to Biden. In his plan, Biden set forward several specific points to his plan moving forward. This includes the support for the Jones Act which limits foreign shipping.

Ultimately, the executive order will strengthen purchasing requirements for agencies. Namely, enforcing the purchase of products and services from American workers and businesses. This enforcement starts with the American government. For instance, in his campaign, President Joe Biden proposed a $400 billion, 4-year increase in government purchases of American products and services.

“As this pandemic has made clear, we can never again rely on a foreign country that doesn’t share our interest to protect our people in a national emergency,” President Joe Biden said.

Other Executive Orders Signed by President Joe Biden

The “Buy American” agenda is far from the only executive order President Joe Biden has signed since entering office. Almost immediately, the new United States President signed an executive order that rejoined the Paris climate accord. Since his campaign, he has said that the fight against climate change would be at the top of his agenda.

President Joe Biden also signed an executive order that prioritizes addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. He has criticized former President Trump’s handling of the pandemic throughout his campaign. Now that he is in office, Biden promises to fight the virus directly, putting in place federal mask mandates and stricter COVID protocols.

Also, Biden has re-evaluated some of Trump’s travel restrictions. Namely, the ones that targeted several Middle Eastern countries. However, he has also signed other travel restrictions to limit the spread of the coronavirus. This restriction prevents non-U.S. citizens from entering America from South Africa, where a new strand has been identified.
