In addition to celebrating the love of the open road and those who enjoy experiencing it on two wheels, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2021 has much more to celebrate and honor.

One of the most serious observances that has taken place during the annual event in South Dakota, is one that honors the families of soldiers who have died in the service of the United States of America. These families are known as Gold Star Families.

During this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally these Gold Star Families received a special tribute. This tribute came in the form of a special statue. According to a photo shared by the rally’s official Instagram page, the statue is called the Gold Star Memorial.

Memorial Bears Words Important to Many American Soldiers

Also, a photo and caption that were shared on the social media platform on Tuesday, Aug. 10, showed the monument. It bears words that are important to many American soldiers – and citizens. Those words are “Homeland,” “Family,” “Patriot,” and “Sacrifice.”

“Have you stopped by the Rally Point to see the Gold Star Memorial yet? #MilitaryAppreciayionDay (sic),” the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally caption read.

Honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces is an important part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. In fact, according to the event’s website, Tuesday, Aug. 10 was designated as the rally’s “Military Appreciation Day.”

Also, this special day was held with the help of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization.

“During this busy time, the City of Sturgis will be designating Tuesday, August 10th as MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY,” the event website also said. “This will be a day to honor and thank those and their families that have and who are currently serving to keep us safe and protect our freedoms.”

The unveiling of the Gold Star Memorial was part of the activities on Tuesday at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Veterans Honored In Many Ways During Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2021

The unveiling of the Gold Star Memorial was not the only way veterans were honored during the motorcycle rally this year.

During the event’s Military Appreciation Day, there was a special flyover. This involved two B-1 lancers racing through the skies over South Dakota.

Not only did the annual rally set aside a very special day to honor America’s veterans, there was something else in store. In order to honor the United States of America and those who served, more than 800 American flags were on display at the famous Buffalo Chip.

Also, one of the event’s motorcycle rides will raise funds for a very worthy cause. Set for Friday, Aug. 13, the Veterans Honoring Ride will raise funds that will support veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2021 will continue through Aug. 15. It also includes concerts, special rides, and contests. Attendees will also have the chance to see Dare Devil Cole Freeman perform a special jump.
