2020 has brought out the worst – or best – in all of us, including Taylor Swift, who’s 6 Billboard Award nominations weren’t enough to make her attend.
Taylor Swift seems untouchable as a music icon. No matter what choices she makes, she remains the top of her generation’s talent. Consistently, too, she pumps out music that is never less than “good” – and occasionally – is truly exceptional. As such, she’s won her fair share of prestigious awards.
So what has Swift dodging the Billboard Music Awards this year? Simple: she didn’t win.
That may make her sound crass or self-righteous, but the COVID-19 pandemic is completely reshaping awards shows. Billboard’s is only the latest to have modify their entire status-quo – film without an audience – and see their invitation list shrink from thousands – to dozens.
While Swift was on that invite list, she is among several nominees to skip out attending in person. Why risk it if only winners will be accepting awards in person? As Elle points out, too, not all categories were even announced during the show.
Taylor Swift nominated in 6 Billboard categories
According to Elle, Swift was nominated for:
- Billboard’s Top Artist
- Top Female Artist
- Top Billboard 200 Artist
- Billboard Chart Achievement Award (fan-voted)
- Top Song Sales Artist
- Top Billboard 200 Album (for Lover)
A win for Taylor Swift in the Top Artist category would’ve been a record-setting third win for her. This year, however, Post Malone won the top award.
The same can be said for the “Top Billboard 200 Album” category for Lover. If she won here – this, too, would be a record third time win for her. Instead, Billie Eilish took it home.
The rest of the categories go in similar directions – with Swift missing out on each. For her, it seems, award shows and the fluff of fame may need to take a back seat for a while. Until things get back to some semblance of “normal” – whatever that is.
Swift turns to politics for the first time
As we originally reported last week, politics were out of the question for Taylor Swift – for a long time. Her entire career, in fact. Until now.
The Nashville megastar stuck to entertainment, and entertainment only. In recent years, however, Swift has changed her tune. An increasingly polarized political climate has led her, along with many fellow celebrities, to begin speaking out.
And this week, Swift did just that by announcing her support for Joe Biden as her pick for the 2020 Presidential Election. In a social media burst that announces both her support and a coinciding political interview, the star makes it clear she’s come a long way since her “zero politics” era:
The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA+ community deserves to be acknowledged and included. Everyone deserves a government that takes global health risks seriously and puts the lives of its people first. The only way we can begin to make things better is to choose leaders who are willing to face these issues and find ways to work through them.
I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs.Taylor Swift
For now, it seems, the world will play host to a socially-conscious Taylor Swift.
